Just like podcasts, TED talks are a great way to learn about, gain inspiration, and get different outlooks on an industry. You can find TED talks on pretty much every industry, from leadership to business and even healthcare. There are many TED talks about healthcare out there from some of the industry’s top leaders that cover a variety of topics, so here are a few of the best ones. Keep in mind that some of these are from a few years ago, so updates have likely occurred within their fields of science.
William Li is a cancer researcher and the head of the Angiogenesis Foundation, a nonprofit that is all about taking new approaches to fight global disease. In this TED Talk, Li discusses a new way of thinking about treating cancer as well as other diseases. This method is called “anti-angiogenesis” which involves preventing the growth of blood vessels that feed a tumor. Li believes that the first step is to add more cancer-fighting foods to your diet that can cut off the supply lines in order to beat cancer before it gets worse. Please note that this talk was given in 2010, and many criticisms and updates have occurred in this particular field.
David Eagleman is a Neuroscientist with a drive to overcome the constraints of our biology. Eagleman believes that while our brains may already be established, we can provide tech that will allow us to take in previously unseen information about our surroundings. One example brought up in the talk is a sensory vest developed at Eagleman’s lab. Eagleman models the vest and explains that it’s cheaper and less invasive than your standard cochlear implant, even allowing a deaf person to understand spoken words.
Jill Bolte Taylor is a neuroanatomist who has always had a passion for studying the brain, mainly due to her brother’s schizophrenia. One day Jill was offered the opportunity of a lifetime which allowed her to study her own brain in a way most scientists don’t get to – she had a stroke, and slowly lost her ability to perform motor functions. Jill shares the story of how she watched her brain slowly shut down, from motion to speech to self-awareness, one by one and how it changed her life and her research.
Atul Gawande is a surgeon, writer, and professor at Harvard Medical School with a vast knowledge of our medical system. Gawande believes our system is broken and uses this TED talk to discuss skills that medical systems should use. He believes that many doctors are losing their core focus of actually treating people and believes that if we take a step back and use skills such as recognizing failure, devising solutions and implementing those solutions, great change can be made.
